Leonidas Dimitriadis-Evgenidis, originally from the Cyclades, was born in Athens in 1958. After graduating from a public high school in Attica, he received his first degree from the Department of Economics at the Law School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA). He then pursued postgraduate studies in Transport Economics (MSc in Transport Economics) at the then Polytechnic of Central London (now the University of Westminster) in the United Kingdom.
Since 1976, he has worked as an executive at the Evgenidis Group, where he has served as President and CEO since 1995. In addition to the Group’s shipping activities, he has also been active in Greek coastal shipping, as well as in the fields of industry, tourism, and modern technologies. In 1996, he was elected a member of the Board of the Union of Greek Shipowners, and from 2003 to 2012 he held the position of Treasurer of the Union.
Following the death of Nikos Vernikos-Evgenidis, the second President of the Eugenides Foundation after Eugenios Eugenides himself, he assumed the Foundation’s leadership in 2000 and continues to hold the unpaid position of President of the Administrative Committee of the Foundation to this day. In 2015, he received an award from the Academy of Athens for the exemplary operation of the Eugenides Planetarium, one of the largest and best-equipped digital planetariums in the world.
He served as a member of the Supervisory Council of the National Library of Greece from March to December 2013 and was among the first signatories supporting the creation of the original Triangle of Maritime Libraries, which has since evolved into a much broader national network of Maritime Libraries.
Internationally, he has served as a representative of the Union of Greek Shipowners at UNCTAD (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development). He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Transport and Logistics (M.C.I.T.) and the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS).
Since May 2018, he has held the position of IMO Goodwill Maritime Ambassador, representing Greece in this initiative of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The goal of this role is to attract young people to maritime professions and to promote awareness of the IMO’s contribution to global maritime affairs, safety at sea, and the protection of the marine environment.
In his various capacities, he participates in lectures and seminars, including in postgraduate university programs, and supports initiatives for the advancement of technical and vocational education. For his work in this field, he has been awarded the title of Honorary Doctor by the University of Piraeus.
